Uranus 2324 (2024) — Thai Movie

FIKSI.NET — It's not every day we get to see Thai GL romance and science fiction (sci-fi) genre. However, if you are not familiar with the on-screen pairing, Freen and Becky, you won't enjoy this movie as much.

URANUS2324 is a story about love that is bigger than the universe, and deeper than the ocean, love between two women, Kath and Lin.

This is a NO SPOILER review. You can read this without watching the movie prior. {alertSuccess}

The two main characters in this movie is played by popular GL couple: Rebecca Patricia Armstrong as Kath, and Freen Sarocha Chankimha as Lin. Aside from this 2024 movie, you can see their performance in The Loyal Pin (2024) and GAP The Series (2022). Freen and Becky have a cult following fans who adore their on-screen and off-screen chemistry. This movie is made particularly for the fans rather than general audience.

Uranus 2324: A Movie Made for Freen and Becky Fans

I call this movie a movie made for Freen and Becky fans with a reason.

Before I know Freen and Becky from watching The Loyal Pin, I was not familiar with them. And I remember I saw URANUS2324 on Netflix but did not finish it, because until the middle of the movie, there is no clear story or plot for me to watch until the end. The lack of color grading, and differentiation in visual aspects when they jump between timeline and alternate universe, made me confuse.

Yes, the scene in this movie jumps not only from past, present, and future, but also between alternative realities. So, you can imagine my headache trying to piece together the puzzle, when they do not give any visual cues.

Second time watching the movie, after I know about Freen and Becky from The Loyal Pin, I find myself appreciating this movie more than I expected. Now that I am a fan of Freen and Becky, I understand why this movie is made and who it is made for.

My impression changes in the second viewing: once a confusing movie, suddenly become so poetic and super romantic. Freen as Lin, and Becky as Kath, trying to find a world—reality—where they could be together forever. The story of the movie becomes easier to understand and to digest. Not to mention, as a fan, I have all the motivation I need to watch URANUS2324 from beginning to end.

So, I don't think you can enjoy nor appreciate this movie if you are not a fan of the pairing. It's really hard to understand, simply because of what I have pointed out before. Aside from it, I see no problem with this movie. The performance is good (if I don't count the weird English pronunciation by the Thai actresses), the soundtrack is nice, the cinematography is amazing... the only flaws is it hard to follow, let alone understood by general viewers.

Very unfortunate in my opinion. URANUS2324 is the first ever Thai GL sci-fi film, and it has every potential to invite more fans for Thai GLs, as well as Freen and Becky in particular. But since the execution is a mess, this movie had missed the chance to tell a really powerful and beautiful story about the power love.
