FIKSI.NET — Female protagonist in game, will they ever be accepted
without controversies surrounding them? I wonder. Of course, among
unreasonable reaction from The Witcher fans, there are still
people who agrees that making Ciri as the main character of the 4th game in
the series is a good choice.
I'm just going to assume you know The Witcher games, since
you've clicked on this article.
But if you don't, where have you been? Take your time to do your
own research about how good The Witcher 3 was, who is Ciri
and stuff like that. Then you can come back, so you can understand what
I am talking about in this article.

The Witcher 4 First Announcement in 2024
Ever since the success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt back in 2015,
when the game first release, fans has been expecting for CD PROJEKT RED to
make another The Witcher game. They have teased it before, I
remember, they were saying that we will no longer follow Geralt's journey.
Fans speculate, if they might take us back to the past, perhaps following
Geralt's teacher and mentor, Vesemir, journey instead.
However, beyond everyone's expectation (apparently, I'm not included in "everyone"), in 2024, CD PROJEKT RED as the developer of the game, announced their
first trailer for The Witcher 4 with Ciri as the main
character.
Of course, it received mixed reactions from the fans of the game. The
most noticeable are comments from the ones who are against Ciri as the main
character and become a witcher. Although, it is not as controversial as
killing Joel in The Last of Us Part II, still... I wonder why games with female protagonist needs to be so
scandalous—if you know what I mean.
Which brings us to the next point of this article...
Is Ciri not allowed to be a Witcher? — Fans Reaction
I may not read all the Witcher novel nor learning deeply about the lore
of The Witcher World, but I played the previous game for more than one.
I played every DLCs of The Witcher 3, and for CD PROJEKT RED to make
Ciri as the main character of the next game is make sense—at least in my head.
Geralt and Yennefer, the adoptive parents of Ciri, even refers to Ciri as
“little Witcher girl” or something like that in the game. But I didn’t
know if making Ciri as an actual Witcher can be very controversial, even for
the hardcore fans of the novel and the game. Their argument being, the trial
to be a Witcher has very low chance of survival, and often times, the trial is
done to male candidates, rather than female.
However, someone on YouTube had explained
why Ciri being a Witcher and the main character of the next Witcher game
makes more sense:
On the contrary to negative response, I am excited to play as Ciri in
The Witcher 4 game. I don't really care if being a female Witcher
is not possible. In fiction, anything can happen, besides,
why not Ciri being a full-fledge Witcher already though? She got the
training, all she needs to do is going through the rial. And with her power
(elder blood in her vein), I think it is possible for her to survive
the Trial of the Grasses.
I love the character since she is being introduced in The Witcher 3.
Ciri is interesting, not only because of her ability to teleport, but
character-wise she is the type of female main character I want to play in a
video game. She is rebellious, independent, and Ciri is brave—she will fight
for what she believes in.
At least that's what I know about her from The Witcher 3.
Final Notes
Ever since The Last of Us Part II mixed reaction happened on the
internet, I have pulled myself back from going to too deep into the gaming
community.
People can't have fun anymore. Anything can become a controversy. Aside from
the initial protest on Ciri's character design—and it's already been fixed by
the developer—I don't agree with what most people say about
The Witcher 4 on the internet. It is too early to judge the game,
it has not even came out yet. So absurd.
